From Where I Am

I am from the '90s,
from Saturday cartoons to jean jackets.
I am from a generation of rebels.
(I blame the violence the video games.)
I am from the balance of inside
and outside, lengthy hours of playing
kickball turned into Super Smash Bros.

I'm from a galaxy far far away,
from Coruscant to Jakku.
I'm from hours of Star Wars marathons
and a massive collection of graphic novels,
from the prequels to the sequels.
I'm from enjoying more time with my uncle
than my own father
and inheriting the former's addiction.

I'm from a blend of cultures
from old Mexican ideals
to new American ones.
I'm from a family of collectors,
Lego sets to cat memorabilia.
From my aunt's and cousins' pets
to my own little fluffballs,
to what I consider my furbabies.
Cousins I grew up with and my grandmother.

My furbabies Patches and Marth ( from left to right)

I am from a new generation,
of scientists and "influencers".
I am from the golden age of the internet.
(If net neutrality maintains.)
I am from self-diagnosed ADHD,
from doing homework to
watching a YouTube video to
playing a mobile game on my phone.
(Simultaneously, of course.)

I'm from a morbid mind,
never forgetting that we only have so much time.
I'm from a time-efficient, neurotic mind.
I'm from a yin-yang style of thinking,
from engineering (presence of mind)
to powerlifting (presence of body.)

  1. Hello Emmanuel,

Saturday cartoons, kickball and Super Smash Bros. were all in many fond memories in my childhood too. Technically I can say I'm from the 90's (myself being burn in 97), but my childhood is more so associated with the early 2000's. Nevertheless, I was able to experience to 90's through hand-me-downs passed on from my cousins. I too came from a blend of cultures. My grandparents had all come from Sicily, and made sure that I knew my heritage. Yet it meshed the ideals of the "old country" were bound to mesh with that of America. I don't know if you feel the same, but I feel that having foreign relatives give one a unique view on American culture. Overall, I feel that your poem resonated with me and my experiences.

    Thanks for sharing,

  2. Hey Emmanuel
Awesome blog! I like how you express both the duality's of the world and the duality's within yourself. It really gives great detail about where you came from and what influenced your life to make you who you are today. The picture of your grandmother and cousins lets us into your personal life and how family was a pillar in your upbringing. I noticed its the first time you post a personal picture so perhaps you are starting to open up because of the blogs and that is a great thing. I look forward you reading the next.

  3. Hey Emmanuel,

I really enjoyed your poem. I definitely relate to your love of Star Wars. I actually like the prequels too. They were my first introduction into Star Wars, since the prequel movies were coming out when I was at target audience, eight year old boys. I also share your love for cats. I have three cats at home myself and they are very close to my heart.

  4. Hey Manny,

It looks like you had a very similar childhood to me with your love of Star Wars, Saturday cartoons and Smash. It's great to hear the kind of lifestyle we, this generation, lead in this sense. It puts things into a different perspective that seems more natural than boring and destructive as many have hinted at. I hope this poem has given you a better sense of self and your roots, and that it can help you go towards your next goal.

  5. Hi Emmanuel, lovely poem. It really reminded me of my childhood where I loved star wars and super smash bros. I enjoyed that your poem went from past, present to future. Your poem also reminded me of the presence we are right now, the good and bad of it. What are your next steps towards your life goals? Btw your pictures are so adorable. Thank you for your well-thought poem

  6. Hey Emmanuel

I really connected with your poem. Those saturday mornings cartoons brought me back to my childhood as I would eat my big bowl of cereal on the couch. I also like how you brought in Super Smash bros. which was my all time favorite game on nintendo 64 . I see that you are open minded and are striving to make a difference in this world. I wish you the best on your goals and continue to influence those around you cause it seems that you are doing well for yourself. Good job!
